2. What is the difference between an apprenticeship and a traineeship?

Simply put, an apprenticeship is (generally) a 3-year course which involves on the job training, as well as TAFE studies and skills assessment. Your apprenticeship allows you to pursue a Certificate 4, and enables you to own your own building company upon successful completion.

A traineeship is generally a one year course, and can lead to an apprenticeship –Year 12 VET studies are beneficial to count towards a traineeship. Training packages are industry developed and industry specific sets of skills and competencies. A unit of competence describes a specific workplace skill, a Training Package for an industry will comprise competencies required by that industry.

3. What are the requirements or prerequisites for becoming a MBA apprentice?

While the apprenticeship program has no formal entry requirements, such as a UAI, most of our apprentices have completed their year 12 Higher School Certificate before joining us. (though this is not essential)

Many have also undertaken studies at school, such as Building and Construction Modules/ VET courses, or at least a subject which demonstrates an interest in the industry (such as Design and Technology, Woodwork etc) This is helpful, as we ask for proof of skills in your application.

Most of all though, we require dedication and application to your work –you’ll be doing it 5 days a week, so you have to love what you do.

For the complete list of application requirements, see our link under Group Training/ Apprentice Info.

4. What is a VET course? What courses are on offer?

VET courses are similar to the subjects taken in Years 11 and 12 (Board Endorsed Courses) however, not all schools offer them, and less students enrol in them. VET courses tend to be focussed on a particular skill, with desired outcomes, and are usually taken at TAFE campuses during your senior studies. VET courses are counted as units of study towards your HSC, but they do not count towards your UAI. For information on specific courses, talk to your year advisor, or logon to the NSW Board of Studies website.

5. What is a Host Employer?

Your Host Employer is the person or company you are placed with during your apprenticeship. This employer may change throughout the duration of your apprenticeship, as it is not uncommon to rotate or multi-skill apprentices over the three year period.

7. What are the benefits of Group Training?

Group training guarantees your employment for the entire duration of your apprenticeship and training. If a host employer no longer requires your services, we can easily move you to another Host Employer, who will continue your training. Group Training gives you the opportunity to work with a range of businesses, and develop contacts within the industry.

Hands-on experience means tangible evidence of your achievement for future employers, and the training and skills based learning is second to none. In addition, the flexibility of Group Training means you can learn heaps of skills, while opening opportunities to greater accreditation, University, or Building qualifications and licences.

Plus, you get to meet and work with a whole bunch of people with the same interests as you.

8. How does MBA Group Training benefit employers?

Host employers get the workers they want, because MBA Group Training chooses the most suitable apprentices and trainees for the position. Host Employers don’t have to worry about staffing hassles such as wages, industrial issues and superannuation, because the MBA does that for you. In addition, you have the satisfaction of passing on your knowledge and expertise to the youth of the Hunter.
